Video: How old is the transponder in your airplane?

Jeff Johnson, one of Appareo’s many pilots, was flying his Mooney aircraft when the Mode C transponder failed mid-flight and grounded his family far from home. Jeff discovered that transponders built before 1995 most likely have a cavity tube — similar to the technology in older radios and televisions — and that is the primary source of failure.

Jeff’s experience with a failed transponder helped shape how Appareo designed Stratus ESG. We wanted to help pilots meet the 2020 mandate for ADS-B Out without relying on their old transponder. That’s why Stratus ESG is a modern, solid-state transponder with built-in WAAS GPS — giving pilots an all-in-one box that meets the 2020 mandate while also replacing their old transponder
