3 Discoveries that an AOPA Pilot Editor Made While Installing Stratus ESG

Like many aircraft owners, Dave Hirschman, AOPA Pilot Editor at Large, was looking for an affordable ADS-B Out solution to keep his airplane flying legally after December 31, 2019. His criteria also included simple installation — for the least downtime and lowest total cost.

Stratus ESG is the product he chose to replace the old King KT 76A transponder in his experimental airplane. There were three key discoveries that he outlined in his article:

1. Truly an all-in-one box.

“The kit (which contained a WAAS GPS antenna […]) was thorough and complete.”

2. Installation was simple.

“The entire installation took less than one day, and it allowed me to keep costs down by reusing almost all my airplane’s wiring, altitude encoder, and transponder antenna.”

3. Being ADS-B equipped might be a good thing.

“As much as I resisted ADS-B, I’ve got to confess that I’m already enjoying some of its benefits. Subscription-free, in-cockpit weather (via an ADS-B receiver and an iPad) is a blessing. And now that I’m providing an Out signal, I get a full traffic picture, and that’s a real comfort.

BONUS! Made in the USA.

“Even though it wasn’t on my original [criteria] list, I feel good about the fact that the Stratus ESG was designed and built in the United States.”
